Meetings and clinical treatment are not alternatives, and plenty of people do both at once.
Is a sponsor the same as a counselor?
A sponsor is a member who makes themselves available to one other member. Asking somebody is allowed to be a short conversation at the end of an hour. Going to meetings first and asking later is the normal order.
