What these mean
- Open
- Anyone may attend, including family, friends and people who are simply curious. Nobody has to say why they came.
- Closed
- For people who have a desire to stop drinking. If you are not sure that is you, an open meeting is the safe first choice.
- Newcomer
- Aimed at people at their first few meetings. Someone will usually explain how it works before it starts.
- Discussion
- A topic is raised and whoever wants to speak does. You can sit through the whole hour without saying anything.
- Speaker
- One member tells their own story for most of the hour. Nothing is asked of anyone else, which makes it the easiest kind to sit through on a first visit.
- Big Book
- Reading and discussion from Alcoholics Anonymous, the book members call the Big Book.
- Step Study
- The group works through the Twelve Steps in order.

Questions about AA in Sussex
How many AA meetings are within driving distance of Sussex?
Sussex has 1 meeting in the list above, so it reaches out to 10 miles and picks up 21 in nearby towns.
Which day is busiest for AA in Sussex?
Every day. Monday is the busiest with 4 meetings, and no day is empty.
Can I go to a meeting in Sussex if I am not sure I am an alcoholic?
8 of the 22 listed here are marked open, which means anyone can attend, including family. 14 are marked closed, for people who want to stop drinking.
Are AA meetings open to people who do not drink?
Yes, provided the meeting is an open one. Nobody at an open meeting will ask a visitor to explain who they are with or why they came. If every nearby meeting is closed, an Al-Anon meeting may be the better fit for a family member.
Is going to meetings enough on its own?
They are different things and neither substitutes for the other. Meetings have no doctors, no medication and no supervision, which is exactly why they cost nothing. Treatment is something you buy and a meeting is not, which is the whole of the difference in practical terms.
What does a sponsor actually do?
Someone who has been where you are and remembers it clearly. A sponsor is not a counselor, a therapist or a clinician, has no training and charges nothing, and the good ones are the first to say so. You do not need one to go to your first meeting, or your tenth.
