No. A.A. charges nothing and never has. A basket goes round for rent and coffee, members put in what they choose, and a newcomer is not expected to put in anything. The only thing a first visit costs is the time and the drive.
Do I have to speak at an AA meeting?
No. You can sit at the back and say nothing at all. The custom is that nobody is put on the spot, and groups take it seriously. Nobody will ask you for an opinion on anything.
What is an AA sponsor?
Another member who has been through the steps and agrees to walk you through them. A sponsor is not a counselor, a therapist or a clinician, has no training and charges nothing, and the good ones are the first to say so. It is worth going to a few different rooms before you ask anyone.
