What these mean
- Open
- Anyone may attend, including family, friends and people who are simply curious. Nobody has to say why they came.
- Closed
- For people who have a desire to stop drinking. If you are not sure that is you, an open meeting is the safe first choice.
- Women
- Only women attend.
- Wheelchair Access
- The room can be reached and used in a wheelchair.
- Discussion
- A topic is raised and whoever wants to speak does. You can sit through the whole hour without saying anything.
- Speaker
- One member tells their own story for most of the hour. Nothing is asked of anyone else, which makes it the easiest kind to sit through on a first visit.
- Big Book
- Reading and discussion from Alcoholics Anonymous, the book members call the Big Book.
- Step Study
- The group works through the Twelve Steps in order.

Questions about AA in Gonic
How many AA meetings are near Gonic?
23 within 5 miles, which is how far this page had to reach to show you a full week. 1 is in Gonic itself.
Is there an AA meeting every day in Gonic?
Not every day. Meetings are listed on 6 days, and Sunday has nothing.
Can I go to a meeting in Gonic if I am not sure I am an alcoholic?
12 of the 23 listed here are marked open, which means anyone can attend, including family. 2 are marked closed, for people who want to stop drinking.
What do people read at a Big Book meeting?
The fellowship's main text, first published in 1939 and still the core of it. It is on sale cheaply through the fellowship and is not something a newcomer is expected to buy. A discussion meeting asks less of a first visit than a Big Book one.
Can family come to an AA meeting?
Family are welcome at open meetings and that is what open means. The person you bring will hear members talking about their own drinking, which some family find useful and some find hard. An open meeting is open to anyone, including people who have never had a drink.
Do I have to believe in God to go to AA?
Not religious, though the wording in the literature is where this question comes from. What members take that to mean varies enormously, people who hold no belief at all attend in numbers, and nobody is asked to profess anything. If the language is the sticking point, try two different rooms before deciding, because they really are not alike.
